Homemade Ocean Breeze Dead Sea Salt Soap

I first saw this soap on Pinterest posted by Rebecca's Soap Delicatessen, and I immediately liked the idea of a salted soap. Unlike my standard shampoo bars, this one is a simpler soap, but with the added benefit of salt nutrition and exfoliation by the way of Dead Sea Salt. So, I decided to give it a try, and my version of it is this one.

It's made with coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, and shea butter.  Added right at the end is a handful of Dead Sea Salt for the nutrition and exfoliation benefits and then sprinkled on the top to make for a beautiful soap bar that is so good for your skin. According to the San Francisco Salt Co., "Dead Sea Salts contain 21 minerals including magnesium, calcium, sulfur, bromide, iodine, sodium, zinc and potassium. These essential minerals naturally occur in our bodies but must be replenished, as they are lost throughout the day. These minerals are known to treat, detoxify, and cleanse our bodies."

Also, according to the San Francisco Salt Co., here are some of the benefits of Dead Sea Salt to your skin:
  • Magnesium: Aids in the healing of skin tissue and provides anti-allergic properties to the skin’s surface. Also it is essential for cell metabolism.
  • Sulfur: A natural disinfectant. It's known as a powerful detoxifying agent, as it works closely with the liver to rid the body of toxins.
  • Potassium: Helps to balance moisture in the skin and body, aiding in the reduction of water retention, and helps to provide nourishment to the skin cells.
  • Bromide: Soothing to the skin, helps to relax muscles and calms the nerves.
  • Calcium: We know it strengthens bones and teeth, but it also strengthens cell membranes and cleanses pores as well.
  • Sodium: Relieves stiffness and muscle cramps. Sodium is also a powerful detoxifying agent; it helps cells retain nourishment and expel waste.
  • Zinc: It is known to protect the skin against sunburn and windburn when applied topically . It is also known to boost the immune system.

I chose to scent this one with coconut oil and vanilla bean fragrances.  I don't know about you, but when I smell the scent of coconut oil, I am immediately transported to the sea.  I grew up on the east coast of Florida, and the beach was a big part of my youth, so the scent of coconut oil is juxtapositioned with the smell of the ocean in my head.

Here's my recipe for using the cold process method::
  • Distilled water               15.84  ounces
  • Sodium Hydroxide          6.90  ounces
  • Coconut Oil 76 deg       16.60  ounces
  • Olive Oil                        19.00  ounces
  • Palm Oil                        10.00  ounces
  • Shea Butter                    2.40   ounces
  • Tussah Silk                     2"
  • Dead Sea Salt                1/3 cup + more for the top
  • Fragrance as desired
  • Colorant as desired

Happy soaping!

Carpe Diem! Lil and Bill

  1. I absolutely LOVE this soap! My skin feels brand new after I shower with this. It exfoliates and conditions all at the same time, smells so clean, and they last quite a long time. I want more!
