Homemade Body Scrub w/ Himalayan Pink Salt

Body Scrub with Himalayan Crystal Salt

This is one of my best homemade products.  I desperately needed something for the dry skin on my feet.  I am a Florida raised girl, have gone barefoot all my life.  The only time I put shoes on my feet is when I'm going out, or when I go into the chicken coop.  I wanted something that would really scrub and moisturize as well. So, this is what I came up with, and it made a huge difference after the very first use.  I now use it after every shower, and I've found a new love!

It contains the following ingredients:
  • Himalayan crystal salt - As stated by The Spice Lab, Himalayan Crystal Salt (HCS) is mined from areas in the Himalayan Mountains that were once under ancient sea beds, compressed into a crystalline state where all of its original minerals and trace elements are intact. HCS is made up of some 84 minerals, all of them existing naturally in the human body. These minerals are in a structurally perfect state for metabolizing and assimilation by the body. Table salt on the other hand is refined into almost pure sodium chloride, with additives like iodine and an anti-caking agent. This refining process strips all minerals away. Rock salt is less refined than table salt but was not compressed into the same useful crystalline state as HCS, thus leaving the fewer minerals that are contained less usable by the body. Even sea salt is becoming increasingly refined with the rising pollution levels in our oceans. This refining process is leaving much less in usable minerals and a heavily altered crystalline structure. The benefits of HCS are that with proper hydration it can help regulate water content throughout the body which in turn positively effects normal body functions like - 1.  balancing blood sugar levels, 2.  encourages proper food absorption, 3.  aids in proper pH balance of the cells, 4.  aids in proper hydration of the eyes, 5.  prevents muscle cramping, 6.  promotes lung and respiratory health, and lastly, 7.  supports vascular health.  HCS also makes an excellent therapeutic bath salt, as these same beneficial minerals can also be absorbed directly through the skin.
  • Dead Sea Mineral Bath Salt - As stated by Masada, The original, natural, and authentic whole organic salts. It temporarily relieves arthritis, psoriasis, rheumatism, muscle pain, eczema, and lower back pain. It softens skin, relieves tension, and promotes deep relaxation. It is physician recommended.  Masada Unscented Dead Sea Mineral Bath Salts are a potent skin relief treatment without fragrances that could irritate. It helps relieve itching, burning and redness while stimulating circulation to help promote natural skin repair. Masada Mineral Bath Salts are imported in a pure, unprocessed extraction in natural form directly from the Southern Dead Sea in Israel. No animal testing.
  • Epsom Salt - The Midwest Bath Salt Company states:  Epsom Salt is a truly luxurious product, often overlooked for its therapeutic benefits, and is principally used in bath salts to sooth, relax, and relieve sore muscles.  Aside from cosmetic use, Epsom Salt has numerous medicinal benefits and supplies the body with magnesium and sulfates.
  • Coconut Oil - 100% Organic Unrefined Cold-pressed, Extra-virgin Coconut Oil.  For skin it is a moisturizer, antibiotic, multivitamin, multi-nutrient, anti-aging, anti wrinkle and an anti-oxidant.   Note that some people say that coconut oil clogs up your pores.  The main reason behind this is that they may not be using pure virgin coconut oil. Other forms of coconut oil have higher melting points, meaning that they solidify at your body temperature and clog your pores which can result in those awful embarrassing break outs. Pure Virgin Coconut oil may cost a bit more than other forms, but it’s definitely worth it for the benefits!  Remember nothing is more important than your skin, so don’t compromise on its health just to save a few dollars.  "Commercial moisturizers contain lots of water, which makes you feel like your skin is being moisturized. But as soon as the water dries, your skin becomes dry again. Also, many commercial brands of moisturizers contain petroleum-based ingredients that can suffocate the skin. In contrast, coconut oil provides deep and real moisture. It helps strengthen underlying tissues and helps remove excessive dead cells on the skin's surface that makes your skin rough and flaky in texture" as stated by The Huffington Post in an article on 6/27/12.
  • Lemon Zest & Juice - Away with dull skin! Exfoliate with lemon to maintain clear, youthful looking skin! Lemon fruit acids are ideal for gentle exfoliation.  Add the vitamin content of lemons and you have a complete skincare treatment right from your refrigerator! To exfoliate, apply lemon juice on clean skin for several minutes, then rinse well.  For brightening it is one of the best natural whitening products known.  Rub half a lemon on any dark areas like elbows, knees and feet. You will soon see improvement in the color of your skin.
So, you see, all of the natural ingredients in this scrub are wonderful and beneficial for you and your skin.  This is a body scrub, some of the salt crystals are too large to use on your face, it would be much too harsh.  Give it a try, you just might fall head over heels in love just as I did!

Carpe Diem! Lil and Bill
