The First Snow On The Farm In 2014!

The First Snow On The Farm In 2014!

If my memory serves me right, we didn't get any snow last winter.  I missed it, I really missed it.  I'm a Florida girl, and I truly don't like the cold, but if I must endure the cold, a bit of snow seems to make it worth while..  We got our snow this year, just the right amount, a couple of inches.  It is now two days later, and there is still a remnant of snow on the ground.  It will be all gone by tomorrow.  A world of pure white will transform into a world of winter brown once again.

I love the snow when it's falling, silence and stillness permeate the air.  Having grown up in Florida, I'm accustomed to rain, lots of rain. Rain accompanied by plenty of thunderclaps and grand bolts of lightening.  There's nothing quite like a South Florida summer thunderstorm.  You can count on one just about every afternoon during the summer months.  Exciting, intimidating, they always reminded me of the wonderful, awesome almighty power of God through nature.  But snow is so very different, silent, but just as awe inspiring, it has the power to stop you right in your tracks.  It seems to purify the earth with it's blanket of white as it enfolds the dead grass, the brown branches of the leaf barren trees, and the barren earth with it's pure whiteness.

The big dogs, Kahn and Kheli, loved the snow, they stayed out in it while it was snowing, seeming to be invigorated with the sheer joy of snow.  It's hard to understand what goes on in the mind of a dog, but their behavior indicated that they were keenly aware of the special moments the snow provided, and were delighted to partake of the rare gift of "snow".  The chickens and guineas, on the other hand, seemed to be rather perturbed at someone or something, not understanding why they were locked up in the coop and not permitted to go outside into their run.  Ziggy, our little Yorkie, found it difficult to do what he is supposed to do outside as he couldn't find any grass anywhere.  I think he gave up two or three times before he decided it was now or never!

Only too soon Winter will give way to the awesome power of Spring as it pushes the first flowers up from the still cold ground, as the leaves begin to burst forth from the empty, barren brown branches of the trees, and the Earth will become green again.  The cycle of life, how amazing it is.

Carpe Diem! Lil and Bill
